FixMyRoadway.com is my personal blog site intended to give the reader information on the state of roadways in East Orange County, FL.  If you want to know the history and what is going on there is no better place that has all the information than right here in these blogs.

Please know that I make no money off this site, it’s only purpose is to share information.

Here’s my story and why this site exists

A few years ago I attended a community meeting over a development in the Lake Pickett area.  A developer wanted to develop the Rybolt property north of Lake Pickett and just east of the Econ River in the rural area.  I was very new to all this and was just curious.  I remember seeing big graphics on flip chart boards of a massive community with about 5,000 homes and a bridge across the Econ at McCulloch.  One graphic showed McCulloch as a 3-lane road with a bus route down the middle.  Being naive, I thought that was pretty cool.

But then some big spreadsheets laying on a table caught my eye.  They were on the big flip chart paper and showed the long range transportation plan for Orange County projected out for many years.  I wish I would have taken a picture but there were about 4 of them with about 20-30 lines on each one.  They showed road improvements by the road name.  As I scanned down the list I saw there was absolutely no roads in East Orange County on the list.  I scanned the second list and it was the same and by the time I got to the last sheet, I realized there were absolutely no road improvements planned.

How could that be?

I looked at the mega-development and back to the spreadsheets and then asked a staff person why.  I didn’t get an answer.  And so it began.  I am just one guy but I knew right then and there that there was no way I was going to support  this development with no road improvements other than a bridge over the Econ bringing thousands of cars down the road I live on.

SOC – Save Orange County

Save East Orlando

I can’t remember if it was at that meeting or another one that I met some folks who lived out in the rural area.  We talked about how crazy all this was and I was invited to a person’s home on S. Tanner where Save East Orlando (the name changed to Save Orange County later) was formed.  There were about 15 of us at that meeting.  We decided to fight against the development.  So we stood out on Hwy 50 with signs like this one.  At first it was sort of weird standing out there but the people in the cars were thumbs up and clapping and yelling in support.  It was a good time.  We did that often and that’s when the signed petitions started to flow in.  It was right in the middle of construction to widen Hwy 50 to 6 lanes.

After a year or so I realized that my interest was not only in the preservation of the rural area but also in bringing to light the traffic issues.  It went back to the memory of those spreadsheets with not a single road improvement on the list.  So I left SOC and formed FixMyRoadway and have been engaged and blogging ever since.

You will find a wealth of information on this site and probably more than anyone else has in one place.  Enjoy the read and stay tuned for more.
