I am not going to go into great detail as everything I would write about the Colonial Parkway is detailed on the FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation) website setup specifically for this project. You can find it here: www.colonialparkway.com. The website is impressive and well done. Look specifically in the documents area to find information that might be of interest to you. The “Project Needs” information was especially informative and tells you why this project is being considered. You can find it here: http://www.floridasturnpike.com/images/colonial-parkwayPDE/5_Project%20Needs.pdf.
It would be good to clear up some confusion regarding two projects that accomplish the same goal. This is a parallel project to one that is being considered by CFX (Central Florida Expressway) which is not related to FDOT in any way. You can read my latest post on the CFX project here: http://fixmyroadway.com/?p=3196. Why are there two projects that accomplish the same goal? Originally CFX was considering extending the 408 expressway which is a CFX toll road from the end of the 408 to 520. At that that time, CFX thought they could use the Hwy 50 corridor. As I understand it, this is not legally allowed so CFX then considered other alternative routes as you can see in this post: http://fixmyroadway.com/?p=3196. But FDOT is also interested in increasing the capacity along Hwy 50 and initiated this study. The big question on everyone’s mind is which roadway will finally be built as only one is needed. I don’t think anyway knows at this point in time. But right now, the cost to build the CFX roadway is approximately 400 million and if FDOT is forced to elevate the roadway above Hwy 50, that cost is 800 million. That may play a part in the decision. And then the question is, who makes the decision.
The meeting was organized in two rooms with one room showing a 10 minute video that replayed over and over as people came and went. The other room was much larger and had several large displays with an FDOT representative at each one to answer questions. there was also a table where people could fill out comment cards. I was very impressed with the 10 minute video as it gave a very good idea of why this roadway is needed. You can view it below. It is also on the FDOT website here: http://www.floridasturnpike.com/images/colonial-parkwayPDE/Kick-offMtg_Presentation2017.mp4. If you are not familiar with this project, this video will give you a good understanding.
The exhibit room was active with many people asking questions and talking to the FDOT representatives as you can see in the video below.
This study has just begun and according to the timeline the next community meeting is scheduled for Spring, 2018. Another public hearing will be at the beginning of 2019 with study completion in Spring of 2019.
Stay tuned for more as information becomes available.
