Yesterday, the Colonial Parkway PD&E Study was well attended. As you can see the format of the meeting was an open forum with several stations showing the study area and representatives there to answer questions. There is no need to go into details here as the FDOT website (http://www.floridasturnpike.com/colonial-parkway.html) has all the information you would ever want to know about this project.
Here’s the GEM that I learned at this meeting. The big question on everyone’s mind is why are there two studies. This study and then the CFX study called the “SR 408 Eastern Extension“. The CFX study has just been completed and the CFX board was going to decide to move forward. The rumor now is that CFX is going to wait until this FDOT study is at a point where the two can be compared. This will be about this time next year according to the schedule below. The last CFX public meeting was a couple weeks ago and was also well attended. Most of the comments were very negative which could be a reason why CFX is delaying their decision.
While many do not want either of these roads built in their backyard, there is good long term reason for the roadway. Even though Hwy 50 has been 6-laned to Avalon Parkway, it will be over-capacity by 2025. The website states, “The latest projections indicate that SR 50 will be over-capacity even with a six-lane widening by 2025”. We will just have to wait and see how this turns out next year.
